Montessori birthday walk instructions
When my daughter was young I came across a beautiful birthday celebration, the Montessori Birthday Walk.
I loved everything about this birthday ritual!
- How it celebrated the child in a non material way
- involved song and movement,
- honoured their individual nd unique stages of learning and growth
- all alongside song and movement and a science!
The time we have with our kids is so short. Some days i long for time alone, biggest parenting challenge.
These rituals and memories with them are such treasures, that they’ll recall, and possibly pass down to their own babies.

About this Montessori Birthday Walk art / download
Once discovering this beautiful birthday ritual, I looked for Montessori birthday walk items in my homeland Aotearoa / new Zealand and they were few to find.
Etsy offered a variety too. But I wanted it to visually show the seasons, as written months meant nothing to little eyes.
Of course it had to be practical and beautiful.
This seeded the idea for me to illustrate this for my daughters upcoming birthday, as a gift to my children.
Beginning with pencil, I sketched out each piece of art for each month, then inked it with a fine tip artists pen, scanned and designed, then watercolour painted each month.
It took weeks of course, as projects do in this house, balancing parenthood.
And so began a special family ritual.
I packed it up as a gift for her. And when she opened it, all those hours of hand-making were instantly worth it!
She was a delight to watch.
The whole family were together, celebrating her, singing and speaking of all her strengths, and looking back at baby photos, which she loved! My son then wanted a turn being celebrated. The Montessori birthday walk quickly became a favourite birthday ritual.
It is requested as part of their special day’s – 6 years later!
I hope your family love this birthday ritual too!
